Darol Dickinson, center, is the ranch general manager and export coordinator for shipments to Europe. Three years ago Jan Olsthoorn, of The Netherlands, dreamed of starting a pure Texas Longhorn herd in his country. Jan has a demolition business and is reported to be able to "Tear down anything" by his friend Daniel Vander Lugt. Numerous trade barriers established by The Netherlands government prevented the import of live cattle. Importation of semen and frozen embryos were more feasible. Dickinson Cattle Co (DCCI)was able to assist Jan by locating a very large dairy in The Netherlands that imported embryos from the US and was using Holstein heifers for recips.
The Netherlands has cumbersome requirements for import but the USDA has equally difficult enforcements for processing and exporting, not without a great deal of expense. However, embryos were collected from the DCCI sires and select donor cows and shipped, frozen to Diepenhoek. Embryos were implanted and good results happened.
 This is the first Texas Longhorn heifer born in The Netherlands, by Tempter and out of Legends Gal. The embryo calves, like nearly all dairy calves are raised on a bottle with milk supplement. After a few months they are moved to grass pastures.
 The first 5 embryo calves are now at Jan Olsthorn's, at his beautifully manicured Netherlands Ranch. Glass green houses cover the landscape. The Dutch people feed 70% of Europe with their scientifically grown green house vegetables. The Dutch technology is world famous. .http://vimeo.com/56129354
 Europeans have not seen real Texas Longhorn cattle. Several TV stations are filming the calves as they develop. Jan is pleased that now the cattle are born, healthy and very high quality, safely at his beautiful property. More are to be born in the coming months. Jan loves the American West and has elaborate decorations all over his Dutch ranch.
 This is "Diepenhoek John Wayne" at 13 months making the first public appearance of a Texas Longhorn bull in Holland. In order that the people would be safe from his horns a protective area was built in front of the display. At this event he was the star of the show. He is a son of Tempter out of Fickle Miss by the Shadow. He is very gentle and his horns are not a threat to anyone.
 Marianne Adriaans mans the Longhorn booth at the NRM National Netherlands Cattle Show in Utrecht. Her booth includes the International Texas Longhorn Assn membership certificate and their first certificate of registration. The Netherlands is getting more western and Texas Longhorns are making exciting things happen.
